Tutorial 5: The Bouncing Ball with More Life
- Create a bouncing ball as described here. We're going to add some more life to this ball by editing some of the inbetweens.
-
You should have key frames on frames 1, 11 and 21. With your
edit tool
selected, click on a frame 8 in the time line.
NOTE: Make sure you have not accidentally selected another level in the time line. You will be working on the clean up level. -
We want to make the ball stretch out just before it hits the ground and squashes. To do this, we can adjust the existing line in frame 8 or redraw it. Frame 8 is currently an inbetween frame, but as soon as you make an adjustment to it, it will become a key frame just like frames 1, 11, and 21. To adjust the existing line, simply use the edit tool to select and adjust the line as described
here
. To draw a new line, select and delete the current line and hit the “Record” button in the line recorder or select “Record” from the in the “Line Recorder” menu. Once you have started recording, you should see an color cycling line indicating the direction of the line that you should draw. Draw a mostly vertical ball where the previous ball line was.
NOTE: there are hot keys associated with many of the actions you will commonly use. The hot key is listed next to the menu item and may also be found in the Hot Keys tab of the properties window. To access this window, select “Hot Keys” from the “Help” menu. - Preform these same steps for the inbetweened line in frame 14.
- Notice how stretching the ball just before it hits the ground helps make the ball appear more alive. For more principles on making animation with life, see “The Illusion of Life” by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston.
Now we need just one more thing to make this ball really sing... A FACE!
